With a fine heritage and a reputation for innovation and contemporary teaching practices, the University of Law continuously focuses on developing the best legal minds.

With locations across all of the UK, including Bloomsbury and Moregate in London, it is one of the UK’s longest-established specialist providers of legal education. Its origins stretch back to 1876 when leading tutorial firm Gibson & Weldon was formed.

Formerly the College of Law, it is a private university which offers law degrees, specialist legal training, and continuing professional development courses for British barristers and solicitors. Founded in 1962, it is the UK’s largest law school and was granted degree-awarding powers in 2006, before becoming the UK’s first for-profit educational institution to be granted university status in 2012. It has eight branches across England.

The College of Law had been incorporated by royal charter as a charity in 1975, but in 2012, prior to the granting of university status, its educational and training business was split off and incorporated as a private limited company. This became the College of Law Ltd and later University of Law Ltd. Shortly after the granting of university status in 2012, College of Law Ltd was bought by Montagu Private Equity. Three years later Montagu sold the University of Law to its present owner, the Netherlands-based company Global University Systems.

What sets it apart from other universities is the guiding principle that the current and future lawyers it teaches should only ever learn in a realistic, professional and contemporary context with the benefit of practical and interactive engagement. Teaching groups are small but lengthy, allowing for more interaction and speedier development.

The courses, from undergraduate law degrees to postgraduate courses and professional development programmes, are designed to equip lawyers with the skills to compete in the ever-changing world of legal services. With a focus on developing skills in problem-solving, weighing up arguments, critical thinking, and commercial awareness, the University of Law’s programmes are designed to prepare students for real-life challenges.

In a recent National Student Survey (NSS), it was jointly classified with University of Exeter, University of East Anglia and University of Buckingham as the UK’s second most successful university with a learner satisfaction level of 92% from its students.

Two years later, it was ranked joint first with The University of Buckingham for satisfaction within the student body, achieving an impressive overall satisfaction rate of 97%.
