Regent’s University is only the second institution in the UK to be granted the status of a private university. Following in the footsteps of the University of Buckingham, it is one of only six private institutions in the UK to have been granted ‘taught degree’ awarding powers, and is now the biggest university among that group of providers.
The not-for-profit university was established in 1984 as Regent’s College, and its strong links to the USA were also created in the same year when American liberal arts college Rockford College took the lease on the South Villa Estate in Regent's Park. This was for the higher education Regent's College to primarily provide American students with a study abroad programme.
In 1985, Regent's College acquired the former campus of the University of London's Bedford College in Regent's Park. Bedford College merged with Royal Holloway College (another college of the University of London) in 1985 and moved to Royal Holloway's campus at Egham in Surrey, vacating the premises in Regent's Park. Regent's College gradually expanded and the European Business School London moved to the College campus in 1987.
In July 2012, it was announced the college had been awarded taught degree-awarding powers from 1 September 2012. Institutions that have degree-awarding powers in the UK are known as ‘recognised bodies’, with Regent’s being one of more than 150. In February 2013 Regent's College agreed to absorb American InterContinental University London from Career Education Corporation and, in March 2013 the UK's Department for Business Innovation and Skills announced that Regent's College had met the criteria to become a university.
It now welcomes 5,000 students from more than 140 different countries, of which 3,400 are undergraduate and 1,600 postgraduate studying across the university’s seven schools:

Around 15% of Regent's students are from Britain. Another 40% come from elsewhere within the European Union, while a further 15% come from the US. Its campus sits in the heart of beautiful Regent’s Park in central London, with its 11 acres of private gardens, making its estate a quiet and idyllic place in which to live and study.
Close to the centre of London, students can expect to have everything the capital has to offer on their doorstep. They can also choose between British and American Degree programmes, and many courses offer study abroad opportunities.
The university’s practically-focused courses develop students’ skills and employability in and outside of the classroom. Many courses place a strong emphasis on experiential learning. Not-for-profit status means that all surplus is reinvested back into the university for the benefit of the student experience.
The Regent's University Student Union organises a range of clubs and societies, including film production, finance and investment, model United Nations and Scandinavian. The union also organises the Students in Free Enterprise initiative.
